6 (+1) Tips for Handling Breaking Crises onTwitter

Dallas Lawrence (@dallaslawrence) of Burson-Marsteller has a great blog on Mashable today on how to handle a crises over Twitter.  One that I hadn’t considered was about being prepared to quickly get a video response up. That is ideal since telling your story personally conveys sincerity in a way the written word can not.

I wanted to add another thought here. Companies of all sizes must make the investment in social media before a crisis hits. So many do not have a dedicated resource to manage this increasingly important channel, and in a time of crisis or in a time of celebration, that deficit will be important. This channel has to be well integrated into the full communications program, and it has to be strategically managed and measured. The best way to deal with a crisis is to prepare in advance and that may be the best prep a company can do – already have a voice out there and followers who know and trust you.
